For Roon-curious Apple Music users

Roon and Apple Music
on macOS

Roon is excellent — but it doesn't support Apple Music. If you've subscribed to Apple Music for the lossless catalog and want what Roon gives you, MusEQ is the answer.

Does Roon work with Apple Music?

No. Roon doesn't have an Apple Music backend. Roon Labs supports TIDAL, Qobuz, KKBOX, and your local library, but Apple Music is not on that list and never has been. There is no public Apple Music API that allows third-party players to stream Apple Music content, and Apple has shown no interest in providing one. Roon cannot play, browse, manage, or apply DSP to Apple Music.

For Apple Music subscribers, "use Roon" isn't on the menu. The choice is really between switching streaming services or finding a different tool.

Why audiophiles want both

Apple Music has the largest hi-res lossless catalog at the lowest price — $10.99/mo for a single user, free with most Apple One bundles, and family-plan economics that TIDAL and Qobuz can't match. Spatial Audio, Beats integration, deep Mac and iOS integration, and the social/sharing layer of the Music app are real reasons people stay.

Roon, meanwhile, gives you what Apple Music doesn't: bit-perfect output, gapless sample rate matching, parametric EQ, headphone correction. The audiophile features. The thing you're really paying $14.99 a month or $830 lifetime for.

MusEQ: Roon-style features for Apple Music

MusEQ was designed for exactly this gap. The audio-engine features that draw audiophiles to Roon, applied to Apple Music specifically:

  • Bit-perfect playback. Apple Music audio reaches your DAC unmodified when EQ is bypassed. Exclusive-mode CoreAudio. No system mixer, no resampling.
  • Gapless sample rate matching. The output device's sample rate tracks the current Apple Music track. No click, no pop, no silence at track boundaries — the way Roon does it for TIDAL and Qobuz.
  • Parametric EQ. Peak, shelf, pass, notch filters. 32-bit float processing. Live frequency response graph. Auto pre-gain calculation. The same parametric EQ paradigm Roon's DSP engine uses.
  • Headphone-organized profiles — better than Roon. Multiple named EQ profiles per headphone, switchable in one click. Profile import from AutoEQ, Squig.link, oratory1990 PDFs, and Roon's own OPRA directory.
  • A/B comparison with level matching. Compare two EQ profiles side-by-side with automatic loudness compensation and gapless switching. Roon doesn't have this.

If you do use Roon, can you run both?

Yes. MusEQ only intercepts Apple Music by default — Roon's playback chain is untouched. You can use Roon for your local library and TIDAL/Qobuz, and MusEQ for Apple Music, with both on the same DAC at the same time. They don't fight.
